Communication – crucial for survival

Us humans, we communicate using different languages, or expressing ourselves using body language and emotions. But how does it work in plants or animals or even cells? How do individual plant cells decide what type of cell they will become? And how can the collective motion of animals help us understand that phenomena?

Dr. Nicholas Russell (Max-Planck-Institut for Plant Breeding Research) will illuminate how scientists are now using the comunication techniques and mechanisms from fish, birds, and plankton to study how individual plant cells communicate between one another to determine which cell they will become – which is crucial for understanding how tissues and organs in both plants and animals form. A subsequent guided tour through the laboratories and greenhouses of the MPIPZ will take you into the world of scientists and their work.
