Our science barn and the show garden once again provided the scenery for the activities of the Cologne Children's University.

A total of 23 schoolchildren between the ages of 8 and 12 took part in a wide range of workshops about the fascinating world of plant research.

Our young visitors investigated the many defence strategies that plants have developed over the course of evolution. Equipped with magnifying glasses, they went in search of diseased plants, pests and useful insects. With the help of binoculars, these organisms could be closely examined, while at the same time the protective mechanisms of plants were explained.

For those who like to be creative, the program included an experiment with different colours of plant material. With the help of a card game, the children collected colourful plants from our show garden, which they then used to make impressive paints and design their own bookmarks.

Another workshop was devoted to the topic of DNA and the future possibilities of plant research. In the science barn, the students were able to isolate DNA from various plants using everyday household items.

The study books of the young "students" were filled with another stamp and our visitors were able to conclude the day enriched with many insights into the plant world.

A successful day for all!
