Rigel Salinas-Gamboa, IMPRS student in the Mercier group, was elected to be part of the new 2022 Plantae Fellow class.

The American Society of Plant Biologists launched the Plantae Fellow program in 2016 with the aim to nurture and grow the global plant science community. Plantae Fellows will share ideas for resources, grow networks and create topical content for the Plantae community.

With just 25 new fellows elected per year worldwide, it is a great honour and a fantastic achievement for Rigel being part of the new fellow team.

Rigel, what is your research project all about?

My PhD project is about finding genetic mechanisms that prevents recombination in pericentromeric regions -where is usually very scarce in most of eukaryotes- in Arabidopsis thaliana.

What inspired you in taking on a career in the field of plant science?

I found amazing the rapid adaption of plants and how we can benefit from them in so many different aspects. I would like to contribute to understand meiosis and to potentially use the findings for commercial crops.

What was your motivation behind your application for being a Plantae Fellow?

I really enjoy writing but as a non-native speaker it tends to get difficult. I found this was the best way to learn, practice and keep updated with recent papers. I am sure I will also appreciate it during the thesis writing process!

What are you mostly looking forward to while being a Plantae Fellow?

I hope I expand even more my mind by improving my reading and writing skills while being in touch with a group of international, talented scientists.
