MPIPZ presents research and campus biodiversity at the Days of Sustainability

September 24, 2026

On 10 September, the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research participated in the University of Cologne’s “Days of Sustainability 2026” with an outdoor information stand along the Students’ Path on the University Medical Centre campus.

The two-day event brought together more than 20 organisations and initiatives to highlight sustainability activities in Cologne and the surrounding region. Its programme included information stands, talks, workshops and practical activities addressing topics ranging from climate change and health to sustainable nutrition and resource conservation.

At the MPIPZ stand, examples of our research connected to sustainable agriculture were presented. Visitors could discuss how plant science contributes to more resilient crops, environmentally responsible food production and responses to challenges such as climate change.

Visitors also learned about the diverse habitats found across the institute’s campus. These biotopes provide valuable spaces for plants, insects and other wildlife and demonstrate how research sites can contribute to the protection of local biodiversity.

Fresh apple juice made from in the institute’s own orchard meadows offered visitors a taste of the campus and provided a natural starting point for conversations about biodiversity, sustainability and plant research.

The event created many opportunities for dialogue with university staff, students, researchers and members of the public. The lively discussions highlighted how closely scientific research, responsible land management and everyday decisions are connected in the transition towards a more sustainable future.
