Open Day inspires visitors

July 13, 2026

Under bright sunshine and midsummer temperatures, the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) opened its doors to the public and was rewarded with great interest: More than 650 guests took the opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes look at plant research and engage in conversations with our scientists.

Throughout the day, our programme offered a wide range of insights into plant research. In accessible scientific talks, visitors learned about current research topics and their relevance for society and the environment. The programme was complemented by numerous guided tours through laboratories, the greenhouse and the estate Vogelsang, as well as a self-guided tour of the institute grounds and its diverse biotopes.

In the lecture hall foyer, many research groups presented interactive stations that invited visitors to explore, discover and try things out for themselves. The programme was further complemented by a photo exhibition providing insights into key research topics of the Max Planck Society.

A central attraction for our younger visitors were the workshops in the Science Barn. Here, children had the opportunity to actively explore different aspects of research, including DNA purification, plant-based dyeing, and discovering the hidden world of soil life. In addition, numerous hands-on activities invited children to participate, such as planting small tomato and pepper plants to take home. At various stations, our young visitors could also collect stamps for their “Plant Expert” passport.

Food and refreshments were provided in the canteen, giving guests the opportunity to take a break and continue their conversations.

The entire day was characterised by an open and lively atmosphere. The exchange between the public and our researchers was actively embraced and greatly appreciated by both sides. The many positive responses show that the Open Day was a great success and inspired many visitors with our research.

We are already looking forward to the next Open Day at MPIPZ.
