The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany, carries out fundamental research on plants using a wide range of methods including molecular genetics, genomics, imaging, computational biology and biochemistry. 

We are looking for an Administration Manager (m/f/d) to start as soon as possible.

Your tasks

  • Advising and supporting the directors in administrative, organisational, grant, labour and building matters,
  • Management, planning, organisation, coordination and optimisation of general administrative processes in the areas of human resources, purchasing, budgeting and accounting, and other science-supporting services,
  • Leading the Administration Department that currently includes 15 employees.
  • Steering of finance and accounting, controlling, budget planning, budget implementation, fund management as well as contracting, procurement and tendering,
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal, funding-related and MPG-internal requirements in the designated areas of responsibility,
  • Cooperation with all scientific departments and research groups as well as the scientific service facilities,
  • Processing of audit matters and pre-litigation handling of legal cases,
  • Representing the Institute to third parties and the MPG General Administration in all non-scientific matters.

Your profile

University degree in administration, law, economics or comparable fields; alternatively, proof of relevant professional training and relevant professional experience, ideally in a scientific environment.

  • Relevant professional experience as a manager in science management or in comparable areas of administration or business
  • Sound knowledge of administrative, civil, labour and public sector tariff (TVöD Bund) as well as public service budgeting and accounting and public procurement law
  • High IT literacy including confident handling of multiple digital office applications (e.g. Microsoft, SAP, Excel)
  • an open-minded, friendly and motivated personality with strong communication skills and enjoyment of working in an international scientific environment. International experience would be beneficial.
  • High professional and social as well as intercultural competence
  • excellent English and German skills, both written and spoken
