Job offer from September 27, 2018

The University of Cologne invites applications for a

 Postdoctoral position in Bioinformatics

The successful candidate will conduct research within the scope of a DFG-funded Germany-wide Priority Programme (SPP 2125 ‘DECRyPT’). Twenty-five different laboratories are joining forces to generate fundamental insights into the molecular mechanisms that govern plant microbiota establishment and function. Cultures of sequenced microbes, isolated from the same environment, will be used as the building blocks of synthetic communities that reconstruct plant microbiota systems.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop and apply computational tools for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing of amplicon, (meta)genome, and (meta)transcriptome data obtained from synthetic community experiments. Candidates are expected to interact closely with computer scientists and experimental biologists and employ computational approaches to deepen our understanding of the evolution and functions of the plant microbiota. Further information on the DECRyPT consortium can be found here:

We seek a creative and motivated candidate with a PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, biological statistics, or a related field. The applicant should be proficient in the use of Linux/Unix and have proven experience in scripting and software development (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java, R). Experience in analysis of next generation sequencing data is desired. The ability to work in an environment at the interface of biology and computer sciences in addition to good communication skills are essential.

The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Cologne but based at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research. The position is initially offered for 3 years with the possibility of extension for an additional period of 3 years, and it is expected that the successful applicant starts between October 2018 and January 2019. Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service regulations (E13 TVL).

The University of Cologne is committed to increase the share of women in research and teaching. Applications of women are specifically invited. In the case of equal qualifications, competence and specific achievements, women will be considered on preferential terms within the framework of the legal possibilities.

The University of Cologne is an equal opportunity employer in compliance with the German disabilities laws. Persons with disabilities are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications consisting of a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and the name of at least one academic referee should be combined as a single PDF and sent to Dr. Ruben Garrido-Oter ( with the subject ‘DECRYPT postdoctoral position” by October 19th 2018.
