George Coupland was elected as a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA).

In recognition of his scientific achievements Dr George Coupland (Director Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research) was elected on May 1st 2012 as a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA). This honour recognizes the many contributions Dr Coupland and his research group have made over the last 20 years in deciphering the mechanisms by which plants control flowering in response to seasonal cues such as day length and winter temperature.

The National Academy of Sciences membership consists of approximately 2,200 US national members and 420 foreign associates from other countries. Its membership includes experts from all branches of science. In 2012, 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 15 countries were elected. The National Academy of Sciences acts as a source of high-quality, objective advice on all aspects of science.

Dr Coupland said “Many thanks to my American friends and colleagues for this recognition of our work as well as to all those members of my research group who during the last 20 years have contributed to the work that has been recognized.”
